It has been stated in numerous financial journals and articles that the consumers should not be wary of monitoring their credit reports. It is also necessary to check that the components of a credit report are true and correct. If information in a credit report is incorrect, the onus lies on the consumers to rectify the mistake. The financial crisis of the recent times which have given rise to huge debts have been a source of concern for the consumers; even those who have sorted their monetary obligations through debt management services have remained victims of a low credit score. Credit scores and credit reports are used by lenders to determine whether the consumer is eligible for credits and the interest rate of the loan. It is also the deciding factor of car insurance premiums, buying houses and the employment opportunities that may come in your way. However, let us explore the things that a consumer can do to remove the errors from a credit report:
• The first step towards error rectification comprises of identifying the error. In order to do this you will need to get an access to your credit report. The consumers are allowed to have a free view of their credit reports once a year from the three credit reporting bureaus. On the basis of these viewings, you can take a note of the items that have been included in the report to identify the errors and discrepancies.

• The next step is to consult the credit bureau, if you notice an error in the report. Thereafter you will need to state the dispute in writing by providing the details about each error. However, you have to be very careful while providing these details along with the copies of the documents to support your claim. You will then need to send this letter to the credit rating agencies and get an acknowledgement from them about the receipt. The credit rating agency will report on the claim within a period of thirty days after conducting the necessary investigation.
• Now you need to contact the creditor or the company from where the inaccurate information has been sourced. If the creditor refuses to identify the incorrect information on the report, the item must be deleted from the credit report.
• In order to abolish the negative items from your credit report, you will need to keep an organized set of all the documents which are to be provided to the credit bureaus to support your claim. Along with all the financial accounts, you will also have to keep a note of all the phone calls with date and time.

It is the responsibility of the consumer to check whether the inclusions in the credit report are devoid of any mistakes which can lower your credit score. The credit rating agencies are going to act on the basis of these claims; once you have received the information that the errors have been rectified, you can get another copy of the report to check whether it has been actually done.
